Furbearer Research Portal

Beaver, muskrat, and mink: fur-bearers that changed the world. Can you help us learn more about these species in the northeastern US?

As part of a National Science Foundation research we are studying the genetics, diet, and behavior of these three species. If you are a licensed trapper in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, or Vermont, we would love to learn from your experiences engaging with these animals. Leftover tissues or bones from your pelt-making process can provide invaluable samples for our genetic study.

American beaver, Castor canadensis
Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus
American mink, Neovison vison
